Made up, indeed...You surname is an extremely well respected one in Italy.The Gagliardi family has for centuries held titles, and the name goes back to Roman times.

The definition offered by Ralph is correct. Although, it came from the sicilian dialect, guagghiardu, the name Gagliardi comes from the medievil name Gagliardo mentioned in records as far back as the tenth century.
Still used in italian, the word gagliardo is an adjective for strong, brave, vigorous and audacious.
