GAHAGAN/GILLIGAN

I am looking for information on William P. GILLIGAN b. 1823-1830 in Ireland d 1913 and is buried in Dell Rapids, SD. He married Ellen FITZPATRICK, b. 1832 in Ireland, d. 17 May 1906 in Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN. I am also looking for information on three of his daughters, Kate (Mrs. James J. MCBRIDE), Mrs. William GAHAGAN and Mrs. John WALSH.

Per the obituary of my great grandmother, Ellen GILLIGAN DEVANEY (daughter of William and Ellen FITZPATRICK (GILLIGAN) she had three sisters living in 1924, Mrs. J. J. MCBRIDE (Aunt Kate) of Lemon, SD, Mrs. John WALSH of Los Angeles, CA, and Mrs. William GAHAGAN. Ellen GILLIGAN DEVANEY's death certificate records her place of birth as Austin, MN.

The 1880 Census for Lansing, Mower, MN, FHL Film 1254626, National Archives Film T9-0626 Page 579B lists:
William GILLIGAN Self M W M 50 IRL
Ellen GILLIGAN Wife F W M 48 IRL
William GILLIGAN Son M W S16 IL
Ellen GILLIGAN Dau F W S 14 MN
John SIMISTER Other M W S 21 ENG
Joseph GALOGHER Other M W S 26 WI
(not listed are the three sisters, Kate McBride, Unknown Gahagan and Unknown Walsh).

There is a Katherine GILLEGAN Other F W S 18 IL, living with the Owen GAHAGAN family in Windom, Mower, MN. We found Kate McBRIDE in the 1900 Census at Madison Hospital (Madison, Lake Co. SD) as superintendent, living with her husband James McBRIDE (married 1 year), also living with them were Kate's parents, William and Ellen. I have not been able to find the McBride's in 1910. There was a new superintendant in the 1910 census and she was not in the Moody County area where her sister Ellen GILLIGAN DeVaney was living. IN 1889 William GILLIGAN bought land in Moody County, SD. He obviously was not living on that land in 1900. They may have been in the process of moving as in Aug. of 1910, Kate McBRIDE bought land in Lemon, SD.

There are two granddaughter's recorded as living with the Michal GILLIGAN family in the 1880 census as transcribed by the Family History Resource:

Census Place: Oak Grove, Anoka, MN
Source: FHL Film 1254615 National Archives Film T9-0615 Page 73D
Michal GILLIGAN Self M M W 81 IRE
Mary GILLIGAN Other F M W 75 IRE (acutally the wife of 81 year old Michal in the 1870 and 1860 census)
Michael GILLIGAN Other M M W 40 IRE
Ann GILLIGAN GDau F S W 10 MN
Bridget GILLIGAN GDau F S W 8 MN

However when looking at the actual images listed after Michael (age 40) are the following four people and then Ann and Bridget.

Dennis MAHONEY Self W M 60 M
Kate MAHONEY Wife W F 58 M
Joseph MAHONEY Son W M 22 S
Kate MAHONEY Dau W F 20 S
then Ann and Bridget GILLIGAN

Since Anoka (Oak Grove) and Hennepin are so close to each other and Ellen FITZPATRICK GILLIGAN died in Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN it appears that William may be a son of Michael and Mary GILLIGAN. I have not been able to locate William in the 1860 or 1870 census anywhere. His son William was born in IL. His daughter Ellen was born in MN. Kate McBride in the 1900 census was listed as born in IL.

I am trying to determine if Ann and Bridget may be the children of William and Ellen GILLIGAN. It may be possible that they are the children of Michael who is recorded as married. He is not recorded as a widower. Either way I am trying to find out who Mrs. William GAHAGAN and Mrs. John WALSH are.
