Looking up 18th century Gallmans
Internet search engines and reference book indices are useful for one-spelling-at-a-time.The Gallman family that moved from Zurich to South Carolina in 1734-35 appears in legal documents under a large number of spellings. Here are the ones that I have seen personally (where there is no doubt at all about which person is meant):
1.German-language spellings, including personal signatures:Gallman, Gallmann, Galmann
2.Additional spellings in South Carolina legal documents:Callman, Coleman, Gailman, Goldman, Goleman, Gollman, Golman, Gowan, Gowman, Kahlman, Solman
3.Additional spellings from secondary sources, including genealogical references from in-law families:Colleman, Kalman, Kolleman
There are many references to this family in the South Carolina Council Journals and other 18th-century original documents. The majority of them are not spelled "Gallman".Not everybody with a name spelled "Gallman" or "Gollman" in 18th-century South Carolina was a member of this family, or born in Switzerland.
