Gabino Surname

My name is Oscar Gabino and I live in Chicago, IL. I'm trying to research the origin of my last name. I have conflicting information about where it may have originated from. Is it Spanish? Is it Italian? It always gets confused with Gambino. When my father was still alive he claimed that my grandfather was Italian... But, as far as I am concerned, I've always maintained a Mexican background. I know for a fact that both my grandmothers and mother are of Mexican descent. Gabino is used as a male first name in many Latin American countries. There are also quite a few GabiŅo's in Spain and L.A. To add to the confusion, there are about 80 or so Gabino's in Italy... I have come up with a few of theories:

a) Somewhere it got misspelled
b) Grandfather purposely changed it
c) If in fact Italian/Gambino, got misspelled upon Ellis Island entry.
d) None of the above (and perhaps someone may have a clue)

I honestly could care less where it originated from. It will not define nor change who I really am. I am a proud to be an American above anthing else. And that's a fact! I'm just curious to find out any information of those who were here before me.

Thanks for your time,
-Oscar Gabino
