I don't know if this will be of any help but, Singleton Gardiner founded the town of Canton or Cashmere in 1825 and built an illegal dam across the Thames. In 1856 the Gardiners commissioned a survey of the village, anticipating the Great Western Railway completed two years earlier would bring more business. The village prospered for a time. In 1857 it received a post office but had to change its original name, Canton, because a place by the same name existed in eastern Ontario. At its peak in 1864 the village had about 120 residents.
