Andrea,
Our ancestry splits at William's father, John Gorton, who was married to Patience Hopkins, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Hopkins of Providence, RI, on Feb 2, 1700.John was born 1675.He lived in Mashapaug (now Cranston) and served as deputy from Westerly in 1705.He was deeded land in Warwick Dec 17, 1705.He was also a sailor.
They had the following children:

Unfortunately, I have no records on the next generation.
William, who married Margaret Tombs, was a justice of the peace, Washington, NY and Neversink.
William, who married Phebe Daniels, has the following entry:
By his father's will he was placed in his brother Benjamin's care at age 13.On Mar 9, 1778 he leased from the Rhode Island government a farm at Point Judith. The trade which he and others were carrying on between Point Judith and Block Island was declared inimical to the colony.Soon after, a company of British foragers raided his farm and carried off most of his livestock. On Mar 25, 1779 he rem. to Nine Partners, Dutchess Co, NY where he bought over 8,000 acres of land.According to Adelos Gorton, "on account of his dignified and gentlemanly bearing, he was called General."
I found all of this information in the book I have called Samuel Gorton of Rhode Island and His Descendants by Thomas Gorton.
You are clearly related to Samuel Gorton (just as I am) who was John Gorton's (the top one from 1675) great grandfather.Samuel Gorton was the first governor and magistrate of Rhode Island (among other things) and an interesting character. Please read more about him at http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/article20.htmlhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/article20.html
Thanks again,
Kenneth Gorton
