I have not heard of Jesse Washington GARLINGTON before. Are you telling me that he is the brother of Henry Clay GARLINGTON who was born 03SEP1868? That is what I am understanding from your message, but I am not sure I am understanding it correctly. Or do you think he is the Elisa/Ella that is listed in the 1870 census? I have seen that happen before. My great grandfather in another line was listed as a female with his name all messed up.
I am beginning to think that it is true that the old man John Hubbard (Hebert)GARLINGTON was running from something he did in Mississippi. Why else would several of his children not have his name listed on their death certificates? It sounds as if they did not want people to know who he was or else they told their spouses not to list him on their death certificates. It is not possible, I don't think, that someone would not know their father's name. I guess anything is possible. I don't know when John Hubbard GARLINGTON died. He was in the 1870 census, but he could have died later that year or sometime before the 1880 census, I suppose. That would have made your Jesse Washington pretty young. There are not many of John Hubbard's children who died late enough to even have a death certificate. Our Mary J. (GARLINGTON) BURROUGH died in 1891 in TX. TX didn't start keeping death certificates until 1903. This is frustrating. I am very interested in learning more about your Jesse Washington GARLINGTON. Do you have or know of a family Bible on this family? Supposedly, Mr. Lovie GARLINGTON of Grant, Louisiana had one. According to the SS death index, he has now passed away. I wrote him back in the early 80's, but he never answered. Do you live in Louisiana? I live in Maryland, but I am a 6th generation Texan and all of my family lives there. Thanks for the information and please let me know what else you know about this family. It has been a really hard family to research. John Hubbard has been quite a stumbling block.
