Lending further support to CONCLUSION # 1 in my original 9/20 posting is the fact that two independent instances of John Hubbard Garlington having been known simply as "Hubbard" (instead of "John") have come to my attention. One is a primary record dated in 1855. The other is a neighbor of John Hubbard Garlington's who knew him simply as "Hubbard" and recorded his name as "Hubbard" in 1932.
