Those are very interesting theories about the Garnes family and ones that I have not heard before. The one that I had been told had its roots in the name I mentioned at Ellis Island as well, where the name is spelled Garnaas, and traced back to Norway where there is in fact a town called Garnes.

You are right about how ambiguous the origin is though. I searched it on Facebook.com and half the people that came up were African-American and on this site there is mention of a branch coming from Haiti. Can we get any more confused?
