In 1998-1999 the members of the had several queries concerning Robert G. D. Garnett.

Here is a message I sent to that mailing list on 08/16/1999:

Hello researchers for Robert B. D. Garnett:

I asked for some information from Doug Garnett relating to "Some Notes on the Early Garnetts in Virginia" by Charles L. Garnett. (especially pgs 63-64) which he graciously sent to me along with some additional information. As I read through the notes of Charles L. Garnett I saw the name Robert B. D. Garnett !

I am giving three bits of information which would seem to give an indication of the parents of Robert and his Dudley grandfather.

1. (This was posted by Janis Wetherbee)
Virginia County Records SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY 1721-1800 DEEDS
DEED BOOK P 1797-1800
page 505
Feby. 5, 1799. Philip Garnett and Elizabeth, his wife, of Spots. Co. to Susannah Garnett of same co. 50. "All right, title, etc., which he, the sd. Philip Garnett has or may have under his, the sd. Philip's, deceased father's will to part of a certain tract of land in Spots. Co. joining lands of Mann Page, Esq.; Majr. Peter Dudley, and Mr. Joseph Bullock, and whereon the sd. Susanna Garnett now lives," etc. Witnesses, Thos. Colson, Tho. Minor, Phil. D. Redd, Peter Dudley. Feby. 5, 1799. [Note the name Majr. Peter Dudley as having land joining the Garnett land]

(In Charles L. Garnett's "Notes"): On Page 63

"Deed Book P, page 137, Spotsylvania County. Deed by Philip R. Garnett and his wife Elizabeth, of Spotsylvania County, to Susannah Garnett, conveying the grantors' interest in lands in Spotsylvania County, under will of Philip R. Garnett's father. Dated February 5, 1799.

2. (posted by Janis and in Charles Garnett's "Notes):
Spotsylvania County Marriages:
Philip Garnett and Elizabeth Dudley, April 3, 1799, Tho. Marston

3. (Charles Garnett's "Notes"): Page 64

Deed Book R, page 539, Spotsylvania County. Deed by Wm. Dudley and wife to Susannah Garnett, William Garnett, Philip Garnett, Thomas Garnett, Larkin Bohannon and his wife Betty (nee Garnett), as representatives of Thomas Garnett, deceased, late of Spotsylvania County. Dated June 2, 1809.

Deed Book DD, page 89, Spotsylvania County. Deed by Robert B. D. Garnett, son of Elizabeth Garnett and grandson of Peter Dudley, conveying certain lands in Spotsylvania County. Acknowledged in Spotsylvania County, August 29, 1831.

This last transaction would seem to me to indicate that Robert B. D. Garnett was the son of Elizabeth (Dudley) Garnett and Philip R. Garnett and that Peter Dudley was the father of Elizabeth Dudley. The wording that the conveyance of land was; "Acknowledged in Spotsylvania County, August 29, 1831" would seem to indicate that he was not located in Spotsylvania County.
Maybe he was in OHIO?

As far as I know; Robert B. D. Garnett is the only known child of Philip R. Garnett and Elizabeth Dudley.
