Hello Carol,
Yes, Claire is indeed a gracious person. We were thrilled to get the family photos.
Mary Garnett wasn't African American. There is another, clearer picture of her on DeadFred - Mary Garnett, Russellville, KY. (Russellville was the home of the other little girl in the photo.)
Mary was my great-grandmother's sister. We are descended from Garnetts of Caroline County, Virginia.
