17th Century Garnett Family of Mansergh, Kirkby Lonsdale
Posted by: Paul R. Willan (ID *****2714) Date: January 19, 2010 at 04:11:39
  of 851

My 6xgreat-grandparents Edward Willan & Mabell Garnett married on 25 September 1712 at Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland, England. In the Marriage License of the same date Edward’s residence is given as “Toscatt” and Mabell’s as “Mansergh Hall Houses”, both in Kirkby Lonsdale. The children of Edward & Mabell, all baptised in Kirkby Lonsdale, were:
•       Thomas       baptised 6 July 1713
•       Alice              baptised 12 September 1714
•       Jane              baptised 18 March 1715/6
•       Thomas       baptised 27 October 1717
•       William       baptised 12 November 1721

Edward’s parents were Thomas Willan & Alice Waithman who had married at Kirkby Lonsdale on 7 February 1690/1. The license for this marriage gave the residence of Thomas as “Tosker” and that of Alice as Kirkby Lonsdale.

According to the IGI, Mabell was baptised at Kirkby Lonsdale on 2 August 1690, the daughter of Thomas Garnett. There are two possible marriages for her parents. The first possibility is one for which a license survives, but it is not in the IGI and has not been traced in parish registers or Bishop’s Transcripts. The full extract for this license is :
       13 August 1684
Thomas Garnett and Sarah Garnett, both of Barbon, p. Kirkby Lonsdale
Bondsman: Nicholas Waterman, of Dent
       To Mr. Briggs and others
The second possibility is the marriage of Thomas Garnett & Jane Ridding on 19 May 1688 at Kirkby Lonsdale. This is listed in the IGI but no license or parish register entry has been found. The marriage is also listed in the IGI as having been held in Sedbergh, Yorkshire on the same date.

Using mainly deeds I have been able to generate a provisional Family Tree for Mabel which has her father as Thomas jnr of Mansergh, her grandfather as Thomas snr of Mansergh and her great-grandfather as John Garnett of Chappell Garth.

Has anybody else got an interest in this line?
