Attempting to find information on John Jervis Henry Garrard born in Clifton, England approx 1814 -- married Phoebe Player in 1839 and father was listed as Benjamin Garrard. In business with a George Garrard (?brother or cousin) on Prince Street, Bristol as wine merchant in 1841 but partnership dissolved and they each went their separate ways but both continued in the wine business. John relocated to Queens Square, Bristol but business went belly up in the late 1840's after which John listed his occupation as Accountant on 1851 census while running a genteel lodging house. Nephew -- William Turner -- was living with the family at that time.
When step-daughter/foster daughter married in 1855 to Thomas Forbes Hudson of London, he and his wife relocated to London living with the Hudsons. When Hudson died suddenly leaving his widow nearly penniless after a prolong lawsuit with his brothers (Hudson vs Hudson), John Garrard along with Henry Smith and Edward Cecil Bisshopp (later BT) ran his wine business until it failed 5 yrs later. John Garrard then operated as an accountant in London. In 1881, he and his wife are living with his "daughter" and her children. Also living with them is Sarah Smith noted to be an Aunt (? wife of Henry Smith?) After Phoebe died, he remarried and died at an advanced age in Brighton leaving a substantial estate to his 2nd wife.
Caroline Sophia DeLancey Hudson named her children unique names -- most of which we have been able to trace to her husband's family (eg Cardoux) or to her father's family (eg LeMarchant) but 2 children have names we cannot connect to any of the families -- Houghton and Dewdney. Anyone have any ideas if they are connected to the Garrard family?
