As it turns out, a recent dictionary of Irish surnames states that Gately/Gateley stems from the name Mac Athlaoich which means either "son of the warrior chieftan" or "son of a former hero". The last part, laoich, means warrior in old Irish. It was reported in this dictionary that that spelling it O'Gathlaoich was incorrect.
