My great-great-great grandparents on my maternal grandmother's side were Patrick and Bridget Miley Gately, who emigrated to the US in October 1865. Family legend has it that they entered the US at Portsmouth, NH, but calls and letters there have yielded nothing in the way of emigration records or any other significant records. They came with their six children, one of whom was my great-great grandmother, Annia Nora Gately, who married my great-great grandfather, William Rogers Williams, on May 8, 1868 at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Holyoke, MA. Annia Nora Gately Williams died in September 1932 and was supposedly buried at St. Jerome Parish churchyard, but calls and letters to the Parish office and cemetery rector have yielded no results of records of her marriage or burial, which confuses the heck out of me! Anybody have any other ideas that they'd be willing to share?
I have tried in vain to find out where in Co. Roscommon these Gately's came from and can find no emigration records anywhere in Portsmouth or elsewhere. Would anyone have a clue as to where I could look for emigration records here in the US, or are any of you related to me through these ancestors? I'd like to hear from you if you are!
