your subject title with 'Gately and Jamaica Plain' caught my eye and then the names within.

My name is Frank Connolly and I still live in Jamaica Plain. My great grandfather was Patrick Connolly and married a Bridget Gately! Seems like that is kind of the reverse of what you are looking for. A cousin of mine has done some Connolly research and she shows that Patrick Connolly (born 1840; died 1922) and Bridget (born 1850; died 1928) were born and married in Ireland 1869. They are buried in St. Joesph's Cemetary in West Roxbury (W.R. is a section of Boston which borders Roslindale and J.P). It is thought that Patrick and Bridget came to the States in 1872. By the 1880 census they were living in Jamaica Plain.
Anyway I used to visit a Bill Gately with my dad(also Frank Connolly, born 1918;died 1972). I thought Bill was just a family friend. I didn't know of any Gately cousins. This Bill Gately was living in Jamaica Plain on the corner of Centre and Aldworth Sts until at least the early '70s.
Perhaps there is some connection of some kind.
