The event that became known as The Trail of Tears took place between 1838 and 1839.
It was the forced removal of over 16,000 Cherokee (Citizens of the Cherokee Nation) from their remaining homelands in the southeast to lands west of the Mississippi, known then as Indian Territory, now Oklahoma.
It's an extremely important part of Cherokee history, and very well documented.

Madison CORNELIUS and America GATELY were married May 11 1841 in Blount County AL, by R L CAIN (JP) and I believe a copy of the marriage record is available.
Census records from 1850 to 1880 indicate the couple were residents of Marshall County, AL.
America was born in NC, may have some more info on her family.
