William Tolley Gattis, b. 1886, TN & LA
Hello!I'm starting out trying to trace my grandfather, William
Tolley Gattis. He died in 1930 when my mother and uncle were
young, and no one in the family knows much about him or his
family background. My uncle sort of thinks he came from TN, and
there is a Putnam County connection through his first marriage.
Here are the facts we do know:

brothers, only one named: George. Vague family memories are
that George lived in Oklahoma.

* First marriage: Dora Eleanor Ramsey.Divorced in 1908.
A daughter from this marriage: Alline Gattis Holloway,

We know Alline lived at some point in Monterey,

(This info on the first marriage is from notes by my father,
now deceased, and that's all we know about this marriage.)

I've done searches on-line for WT, George, Dora and Alline at:
familytreemaker.com; ancestry.com; the Social Security death
index; the IGI and the Ancestral databases at the
familysearch.org site; and, genealogy.com.The only possible
"hits" are:
a) familytreemaker.com lists a "Alline Holloway" in
WFT Volume 25. Tree: 1419
b) familytreemaker.com lists a "Dora Ramsey" in
Marriage Index: Tennessee, 1851-1900 (#235)
I don't have either of these (but could of course order
them). I've looked at the extensive family trees of the Gattis
families in Tennessee that I found at familysearch.org, but I
don't see how William Tolley might fit into those.

Can anyone help me trace my Gattis ancestors?I would welcome
suggestions on how best to tackle research on this in Tennessee.
(The only genealogy work I've done before is in Lousiana.)I'll
be in the Oak Ridge, TN, where I grew up, from August 10-16, so
I'm wondering what I could do during that visit either at the
university library in Knoxville or perhaps over in Putnam County.
