In all likelihood, your message refers to Darmstadt. While it is a city, the term almost always refers to any town or village in the duchy once known as Hesse-Darmstadt. I have a lot of information about the Gaul ancestry in the Magdlos/Flieden area of Germany. This are villages near Fulda in Hessen, and might be the town of birth of your emigrating ancestor.I have some records which I will check for you. If you have gathered any more information, please let me know.It sounds like your Jacob would have emigrated during the height of the Hessen emigration about 20 years after his birth. Many Hessians settled in Pittsburgh, where I reside, and others settled in Wheeling and eastern Ohio. One of my cousins is a German native whose mother's maiden name was Gaul, and she has done a lot of research in that area. Gary Gaertner
