aka Muscon, de Ghent, de Gand, de Gant
Buried: Bardney, Lincolnshire, England
Folkingham was probably already a small hamlet when the Romans came and built the Roman Road that runs a few miles west of the village. It is part of the old Kingdom of Lindsey that existed in King Arthur's time, although considered part of Kesteven now. The village is best known after the battle of Hastings in 1066 when William the Conqueror gave vast estates in the counties of Lincoln and York to (Baron) Gilbert de Gant (or Gaunt), his nephew and a General in the Norman army, in return for service rendered. Folkingham was the seat of his estate. Gilbert's son Walter married Maud, daughter of Stephen, Earl of Richmond.
Immediately before the Conquest, Folkingham Manor, extending to twenty-seven villages, was held by Ulf of Fenisc and it was his principal estate. By Domesday it was in the hands of Gilbert de Ghent, nephew of William the Conqueror’s wife, Matilda. One of the biggest Norman landowners, Gilbert had properties in eleven counties including Lincolnshire where he held 120 places. In order to strengthen their hold on the conquered realm, the conquerors built many castles including one at Folkingham. This castle was not built, as one would have imagined, on the highest point of the village, but further down the hill, probably taking advantage of the defence offered by water and the mound on which it was built is still surrounded by a moat.
GILBERT DE GANT, son of Baldwin, Earl of Flanders, by Maud, sister of William the Conqueror, accompanied his uncle into England, and participated in the triumph of Hastings, obtained a grant of the lands of a Danish proprietor, named Tour, with numerous other lordships. This Gilbert happened to be at York, anno 1069, and had a narrow escape, when the Danes, in great force on behalf of Edgar Ethelling, entered the mouth of the Humber, and marching upon that city, committed lamentable destruction by fire and sword, there being more than 2,000 Normans slain. Like most of the great lords of his time, Gilbert de Gant disgorged a part of the spoil which he had adeed to the church, and amongst other acts of piety restored Bardney Abbey, co. Lincoln, which had been utterly destroyed many years before by the Pagan Danes.
