My great-grandfather Patrick Ambrose Gavin was born about 1840 in County Mayo, grew up in Liverpool, and came to the USA in the early 1870's, I believe. I don't have any proof that he lived in Scranton, but his 2nd wife Mary Ellen Walsh came from a family in the Scranton area. They were married in Yankton, Dakota Territory and eventually settled in Omaha and raised their family (5 daughters and one son Philip born in the 1880's and 1890's) there (along with an older daughter from Patrick's first marriage in England). I have to believe that Patrick must have spent some time in Scranton to have made the connection, but this is just speculation. Does any of this ring a bell with you?
