Histon Publicans
John Gawthrop took over the licence of the Barley Mow Public House in Histon in 1858, and the following year purchased the freehold of the property.He then continued there as licencee for the next 58 years, until his death in 1900. He was described in census returns variously as Publican, brewer, baker and farmer.The 1871 census shows him farming 30 acres at Histon, employing 2 men.As late as 1881 he was still brewing his own beer.On his death, his son Frederick briefly took over the licence, but he himself died in 1906.
Albert Gawthrop took over the licence on The Green Hill Public House in Histon in the 1890’s.He was publican in 1904 when the original 18th century property was destroyed by fire.The building was eventually rebuilt and Albert Gawthrop was retained as publican, and continued as such until the outbreak of the first world war.
