Gay, I have this on Virginius Gayle and Lucy Proctor -- I didn't know about their three sons, only their daughter who joined the DAR on the service of Matthias Gayle (father to Bartlett Gayle and great grandfather to Virginius).I got my information on Virginius from her DAR application. Here is a little of his heritage. If you have more, please let me know.
This is an excerpt from my Gayle Chapter in a book that I should be printing up in a month or so -- didn't quite make my Christmas goal.If you'd like more on the Virginia Gayles and Virginius' three Gayle uncles that migrated to Texas (Alexander, William and George) write me at:[email protected]
Of the five brothers, only Matthew (Virginius' father) and Joshua (my direct ancestor) stayed in Virginia.

III.Matthew Gayle was born in Mathews County, VA about 1820, the son of Bartlett Gayle and Martha Buckner. He married Jane Beasley, born about 1824, who was probably his first cousin -- the daughter of his aunt, Susannah Buckner and Ephraim Beasley.Matthew was a successful farmer, with a considerable number of slaves, having as many as twenty in the 1860 census. His real estate at that time was worth $15,000 and personal worth, $19,500.Matthew was alive as late as 1886, when he was listed as the informant on the death certificate of his son, Willie. He and Jane had six children:
A.Martha G. Gayle, born in Mathews County about 1845.She was still living at home at age 35, unmarried, according to the 1880 census record.
B.Georgiana Gayle, born in Mathews County about 1847.She died June 29, 1882.
C.Virginius Gayle, born in Mathews County on February 21, 1848.As his uncles before him, he felt the call of the West, eventually settling in Oklahoma. There he married Lucy Proctor (1857-1935) on July 27, 1876.Virginius died on February 22, 1913 at Holdenville, Oklahoma. They had at least one child.
1.Mary Buckner Gayle, born November 7, 1882 in Bridgeport, Texas. She married Henry Adolphus Archerd in Madill, Oklahoma on October 22, 1902.She applied for and was accepted into membership of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1950 through the patriot, Mathias Gayle, her great-grandfather.She died in Holdenville, Oklahoma on June 10, 1958.It is not known if she had children.
D.Charles Gayle, born about 1851 in Mathews County. He was a farmer and still living at home as late as 1880 at age 28.
E.Lucy H. Gayle, born about 1856 in Mathews County. She married Mr. Miller and died on June 16, 1910 at age 54.She is buried at the Trinity Church cemetery.
F.William A. Gayle, called "Willie", was born in 1860 in Mathews County. He died there in 1886 after suffering most of his life from "rheumatism".
