Subject Joseph Gelinas immigranted to the USA from Canada and naturalized in 1911. On the 1910 Chicago, Cook Co. Illinois census he, age 12 born Canada, is listed as the nephew of Antone Gelinas, age 39 (b. 1881 in Canada). wife Onita age 37 Canada, son Antonio (Thomas Antonio) age 12 Illinois, daughter Blanche age 2 Illinois. In 1920, he, age 21 is still living with his Aunt Onita Gelinas age 48 widow and cousin Thomas A. Gelinas age 24.
That is all of the current census records that I have.
According to family knowledge, Joseph Gabriel "Gabe" Gelinas was born April 6, 1910 in Canada. He died May 6, 1949 in Chicago, Cook Co. Illinois. He married 17 April 1944 in New Haven, Connecticut to Mabel Elisse Cooper born August 22, 1914 Richland Co. SC. Died October 7, 1962 Chicago, Cook co. Illinois.
According to family knowledge Gabe as he was professionally called, was the son of Joseph Gelinas and Marie Louise Boisclair of Canada. I have no data on either of them.
According to family knowledge, Gabe was a professional saxaphone musician and played in the Jan Savit orchesta of the Big Bands area. Elisse Cooper Gelinas, known professionally as Elisse or Elise Cooper sang in the Eddie Delange orchestra, also with the Jan Savitt, Charles Barnett and Buddy Sweeney bands. She recorded on Blue Bird Records. Does anyone remember them?
Gabe enlisted in 1943 for World War II in New York as a resident of Illinois according to the United States Army enlistment records.
Gabe and Elisse had one child: John Joseph "Jodie" Gabriel Gelinas born 1946 Chicago, Illinois and died 1999 in Richland Co. SC where he had gone to live after his mother's death, with his mother's brother. Jodie married Patricia Reid and had one child.
Can anyone add the vitals to Gabe's parents and place them in the Gelinas famly tree?
Betty K. Price (only related by marriage)
