Hello, Bob -
I have been reading your postings regarding the Gelinas-Bellemare family. You could be the missing link I have been searching for! My maiden name is Belmar and most of my family line lives in Missouri - St.Louis region as well as Southeastern Missouri - all French settled. As far as we have been able to determine, the family can be traced via the name Bellemare to Canada. And, then it dead ends! My father has always told me that the spelling of the name had been changed, i.e. Americanized.

Your information on Jean-Baptiste Gelinas who took on the Bellemare name could very well be the linkage I have been searching for and explain why we cannot trace beyond Canada. If you follow this link:
it will take you to the my direct family line and you will be able to see where our tracing ends.

Do you have a family tree that has Jean Baptiste Gelinas Bellemare's descendants? One that could possibly be linked to the family tree listed on the website above? And, do you have any idea WHY Jean-Baptiste changed his name, as well as his brother to Lacourse? Any information you might have would be so appreciated.

By the way, on the tree above, my line starts with Albert, my grandfather, (whose parents were Samuel and Katherine Allgier). My father, Charles William Belmar, isn't listed on the tree - only his brother, Ray.

Sandy Forrester
