Name Variations

Does anyone have any information on name variations? I have found a way to translate a German forum and got one reply back from a gentleman who is of the Hesse/Hohenzollern lines and has no record of a Leah in their lineage marrying a Gelwicks. Found some info that could possible be of interest on an Anna Margaret Gemelcks who married a John Oyler (Eyler), the parents of Maria Dorothea Eyler who married Johan Frederick Gelwick in 1833. Her father was a Johannes Gemelcks. Noticed in some of the family histories back then, there was a lot of intermarriage among cousins. Is it possible that Gemelcks was changed to Gelwicks upon arrival in US?

Have posted on the German fourm and am awaiting a reply.
