Trevor, the fix worked a treat! Thanks again.
I found that the offending programme was called 'OpwareSE4', which I now realise was installed when I comissioned my Cannon MP600 printer/scanner/driver. I presume that it is associated with the scanner function, and therefore with OCR-type operations. This backs up your paragraph 14 possibility. The CD-ROM from which the Cannon software was loaded is PIXMA MP600 v MCD1.0 QH7-2275 for Windows.
