Jim,
My wife is a descendant of Elijah's brother Nathaniel. Here is the information we've been given.Hope it helps.
-----------------------------------------------------
William Gentle (also spelled Jentle) came to Cumberland Co, KY in 1805 from Rowan Co (?), NC.His land on the Oil Forks of Bear Creek adjoined that of his future father-in-law, Jesse Bow, when it was surveyed January 31, 1806 (Bk B.l Page 83).He came with his mother, Mary "Polly" Gentle (born before 1765, nee Kinkaid/) and two possible brothers, John and Stephen.
In 1800 John had married Elizabeth "Betsey" Keen in Surry Co., NC.She was the daughter of Nicholas and Penelope Keen, who also came to Cumberland Co. about the same time.Indications are John moved to Franklin, Co. TN by 1830, just a short distance from Jackson Co., AL where William move to by 1830 also.
Stephen Gentle is found only once, as a defendant in 1821 in the Cumberland County Court Index (complete records not found). He may have moved to Livingston (now Crittenden Co., KY and on to Morgan Co, ILL by 1830.
William was born about 1789 in SC (his son said NC), married Elizabeth Bow about 1806 in Cumberland Co, KY.she was born about 1791 in NC and was the daughter of Jesse and Rhoda (Thurman) Bow who were married 6/21/1790 in Pittsylvania Co., VAJesse's parents were Jacob (died 1782, Louisa Co., VA) and Lucy (Farrer) Thurman (daughter of Perrin & Sally (Lucy) Farrar), all from Virginia.
As yet I have been unable to positively identify William's father, but have learned there were at least 5 children.
It seems that William commuted between KY and Jackson Co., AL.He had remarried by 1825 to "Polly" and was in AL by 1830.He again married in 1848 to Sarah Harper in Jefferson Co, AL His son Elijah B. who had married Oner? (c. 1814 - 1840) about 1829 followed his father to Jackson Co, AL by 1840.Ellen reported married ? Harr and moved to Alva, IL.Nathaniel remained on Bear Creek in Cumberland Co.
