Concerning Joseph, your information about a second marriage is surely false.Whoever was posting that must have been confused about the identification of the Joseph's.The Greene Co. Joseph's widow, Polly was living in Greene Co. in 1850 with her family, but without Joseph.
As to Shelton.I wonder if you are confusing the Shelton who you say married Mary Kelly with one of the Sheltons in Warrick Co.There were two Sheltons there, one in Pigeon Twp, and one in Owen Twp.The latter was married to a Mary.He was about 10 years older than his second cousin in Greene Co., and their oldest child was age 10 in 1850, so they were married about 1839. These two Sheltons were first cousins.Their grandfather was Samuel Gentry of Surry Co., NC and Barren Co., KY.
The Shelton in Greene Co. was a second cousin of the two in Warrick Co.His grandfather was Shelton Gentry of Surry Co., NC, a younger brother of Samuel. This Shelton was living in Greene Co. in 1860 with his mother, Polly, and was not married at the time.
