According to Henry V.'s biographical sketch, William Jerard was a British soldier who was stationed in Canada and deserted along with several others and came to NY.
His wife (Pheobe Vincent) and children are shown alone in the 1860 census, which makes me suspect that he had died before 1860 or else may have left his family. His son William junior's biographical sketch claims that Willliam died in the Union army in the civil war, but that makes little sense as he would have been about 61 in 1860 and likely too old to have been in the Union Army when his sons enlisted a few years later. This makes me suspect that William junior (my ancestor) might have had something to hide about his father and made up the story about the Civil War to cover up what really happened to William senior.
