Hi,i'm currently resaerching my own family history. whilst nowhere near complete, i can trace it to the Gerrards of Bryn, Lancashire, england. I think you will also be a decendant of this famouse and wealty historical family. The first Gerrard to settle in America went from here and his decendants practically helped form early america. They became rich landowners (Maryland), served with custer at the battle of little Big horn, one even married George washingtons grand daughter. this can all be traced on the pages of the webb. however, going back to the Gerrards of Bryn,.i've traced them back.here are a few bullit points of note, due to the facts i've unearthed i've decided to document the issues in a book form, when it will be completed i dont know. The GERRARDs (different spelling due to transulation and literacy over time), originated in Florance, Italy, owned lots of land there. The Family name was Gherardini.
gherardini was also the surname of Mona lisa Gherardini, painted by Picaso.
gherardini also founded the House of Hansover, later to be named Germany. it is also worth noting that The present Queen of England is from the House of Hanover, her fathers family changing their name to the house of Windsor after world war 1. The windsor castle in london was give to the Norman lord otho, by William the conqueror after the battle of hastings in 1066 for his help in invading England, he was also given (as were other Norman lords and Barons) pockets of land scattered around the british isle. otho Fitz-gerald (Gerrard) lived at windsor for decades, his offspring taking up titles in England Ireland and Scottland. The Gerrards were strongly of the catholic faith and invoved in many famous (documented) incidents, including the Gunpowder plot, and involved with the Kings and queens of england and scotland through the ages.
Hope I'm not boring you but as I said the gerrards of Bryn were very important people. it was also common for noblemen thosedays to speak French also.
so to sum up without the detail,
(1) your original ancester came from Bryn, in Lancashire, (2)his ancester came as a Norman nobleman, with his armies via the Battle of Hastings in 1066 fighting alongside William the Conqueror.
(3)He was given land and Winsor castle for his trouble.
(4)He came from Normandy (France)
(5)and originaly from Florence named Gherardini (Italy)
(6)Gherardini founde the house of hanover (Germany) from which the present Queen of england is decended (and of course the late Russian Tsars as they were related.
(7)going even furthur back to the 7th century, the Gherardini's can be traced back to the battle of Troy.
It all sound too good to be true but its surprising how much info is available on the web. I hope this has wetted your apetite to research futher. should you wish to contact me my e-mail address is mikegerrard007@hotmail.co.uk
