From Bryn (wigan) on the lancashire/cheshire border (midway between Manchester and Liverpool, members of the Gerrard family moved south to Buckinghamshire (Gerrards Cross, now the most expensive place to live in England). Some changed their name to GARRET probly to avoid persecution from anti-catholics. They became rich merchants dealing internationally in cloth and even becoming Lord Mayor of London on many occasions. For anyone interested their is a webb site titled Garrets before America, owned by a John Garrat in the States who has done a lot of research into our family, try 'googleing' it.
