Sherman Lawyer, 92, Dies in Fort Worth
Sherman, Texas, May 2: With a recognized record of civic service to his credit, one of Grayson County’s oldest citizens, JAMES PRESTON GEREN, died Tuesday at 1 a.m. Death for the 92 year old Sherman real estate man and lawyer came at the home of his son, PRESTON M. GEREN of Fort Worth, with whom he had been staying the past several weeks after coming from Pensacola, Florida, where he was at home with his daughter, Mrs. D. A.VANN. The body will be brought to Sherman Wednesday and funeral services will be conducted by J. A. Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sherman, of which Mr. Geren was a member, Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the old family home in Sherman. Burial will be at West Hill Cemetery beside his wife, who died in August, 1930.
Mr. Geren was born Feb. 4, 1841 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. After active service in the Civil War, Mr. Geren came to Texas in 1873, teaching school at Whitemound,Grayson County, later coming to Sherman. He had resided here continuously for almost 60 years, going to Florida to be with his daughter after Mrs. Geren’s death. Mr. Geren was the last charter member of the Mystic Lodge 12, Knights of Pythias of Sherman and the oldest surviving member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He served a term both as mayor of Sherman and as a school trustee.
Before coming to Sherman, Mr. Geren married Miss MARIAH FEARN PUTMAN of Louisiana. Surrounded by their children, Mr. and Mrs. Geren seven years ago celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. All three children survive, PRESTON M. GEREN of Fort Worth, OSCAR GEREN of New Orleans, La., and Mrs. VANN of Pensacola, Florida. Mr. Geren enlisted in the Confederate Army at Minden, La., in 1861 and saw active service in many battles. He was wounded three times, the last at Jonesboro, Georgia where he lost his right arm.

First lt. LLOYD F. GEREN, pilot of Eighth Air Force fighter stationed in England, has been awarded a third Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal for serial flight over enemy occupied Europe. His wife, the former EVELYN FAYE DOTY, and daughter live at 2835 The Mall. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. SIM F. GEREN of 306 East Twelfth.

Funeral services for JAMES M. GEREN, 72, of 4033 Kallock Drive, a retired city of Dallas employee, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Sparkman Funeral Home, 2115 Ross Avenue. Rev. A. J. SHEPPARDSON will officiate. Burial will be in Myrtle Cemetery at Ennis. Mr. Geren died Tuesday after a short illness. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. BERTIE MAE GEREN; two daughters, Mrs. RAYMOND (JUANITA) HINES of Dallas and Mrs. NICK (HELEN) HALIBURTON of San Jose, California; three brothers, TOM GEREN of Rowlett, SIM GEREN of Dallas, and ARTHUR GEREN of Mckinney; four sisters, Mrs. ELIZABETH DELK, Mrs. LOTTIE SCHUSTER, Mrs. PHRONIA JONES, and Mrs. RUBY PEACOCK,a ll of Dallas, and three grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. PHRONIA JANE JONES, 79, of Audelia Road, life long Dallas county resident, will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Tuesday at the Plano Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Mutual Cemetery of Plano. Mrs. Jones died here Sunday. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. JOHN WEBB of Richardson and Mrs. E. L. BLACKSTOCK of Plano; three sons, VERNON L. JONES, CECIL JONES and J. W.
