@ VS # in LDS marriage records

I am wondering if someone can shed light on the difference between the "@" symbol and the "#" symbol in the records below.
These records were sent to me by a researcher who said he found them in the LDS records (nothing more specific as to source).

They show marriages in Germany.

STOMPS, HELENA MARIA @ JOHANN BERNARD NEU married on 19 MAY 1857 at SANKT GEORG KATHOLISCH CHURCH in WESTFALEN, BOCHOLT.

A second record:

STOMPS, MARIA HELENA # FRIEDRICH NEU married on 02 DEC 1837 at WESTFALEN, BOCHOLT, EVANGELISCH.

Note difference between @ and # in the above records. What is the difference?

Also, does anyone know about the German habit of using middle names in place of first names? It seems something is going on with German given names that I am not aware of....

Thanks,

John HARN
