At their height the German lands stretched across a sizable span of Europe. Naming traditions may not have been the same across such a large amount of territory.
Even so, there is a tradition of awarding first names as an honorific to some friend or family memeber. The holder of the honorific name may have used it or his second name. In my grandfather's family the siblings used both options. The only thing that makes me think the honorific name was not intended to be used was the awarding of the name Wilhelm to two of the sons. Wilhelm Emil always used Emil but, unfortunately, Wilhelm Richard died as an infant.
