first name changes

When my ancestors arrived in America from Germany, they kept their last name the same. However, many changed their first names. Some just had an American version of their German name (Johann to John or Friedrich August to August) on US records, while others completely changed their name (Friedrich Wilhelm to Alois). Other changes I didn’t understand include Johanna Sophie to Maria, Johann Friedrich to Anton, and Johann Friedrich Wilhelm to Peter. Has anyone else run into a situation similar? Is this common or does anyone knows why those changes occurred? Was it just to have more American sounding names? Thanks for any light you can shed on this situation.

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm – Wilhelm, William, Peter

Friedrich Wilhelm – Alois, Aloysius

Johann Gottfried - John

Sophie Friederike Wilhelmine – Wilhelmine

Friedrich August - August

Johann Friedrich – Anton, Antonius

Johanna Sophie - Maria
