In can't explain it completely, but in Germany it wasn't unusual when the third or second forename was the first name, how they were called all day. So Johann Friedrich Wilhelm could have been called Wilhelm in Germany too, but his complete name, how it is written in the church book, is longer. It's the same with many of my ancestors.

Friedrich Wilhelm -> Alois : Maybe Friedrich Wilhelm wasn't his complete name and Alois was the third one. Have you seen the church book records? Alois is (was) a usual name in Germany, so it isn't a real americanisation. The same with the others. The only real americanisation is John.
