How to research records in Bavaria

My gg-grandfather F.A. (Frederick Adam) Finster(er) was born around 1815 in Bavaria. He immigrated to the United States I believe sometime between 1840 and 1850. I cannot find anything abt him prior to the 1850 census records with him living in Polk County, TN. He lived there until his death.
Family lore and census records has him being born in Bavaria. I have no idea of a village/town name. I believe is religion may have been Lutheran from something that other family members told. Is there a way to search with only that information to go on? I am trying to find anything on his parents and any other family members.
Thanks for any suggestions!
