The name "Strife" may have been a typo on the part of an American census enumerator, or the Castle Garden immigration official when Joseph A Polzin's ship the "Columbus" docked in New York City.
On an earlier posting in 2005, I had asked about my maternal grandfather John Joseph Polzin ( one of the sons of Joseph A Polzin); & i had received 2 replies from Norbert Stevens, showing a few census results that someone had posted on One World Tree; among the information was that Joseph a Polzin was born in March 1846 in "Strife" Germany, & that his parents were Peter Polzin & Anna Schultz. However, in old German script, something that looked like an "S" was often an "F", or possibly even another letter. (The same may be true of the other letters in this name "Strife")
Also, my mother often mention that some of her Polzin ancestors came from a town that they were named for (or that was named after them & other Polzins); she said that this town or city was on the Polish/German border & was named Polzin? Polcyzn? Posen?
Sincerely, Mary rosaire Anderson
