My 4th great-grandfather is John Peter Gernert, born ca 1765 in Germany and came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he worked out his ocean passage fee and then married Anna BUDD, daughter of Andreas Budd (or Bott), about 1782 at Philadelphia.

After their marriage, John and Anna BUDD Gernert reportedly followed up General Sullivanís expedition and arrived at Tioga Point, Pennsylvania (later named Athens) about 1786. From Athens, John and Anna traveled west and settled about 1812 in a region that later became Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

Peter Gernert, assumed to be the same person as John Peter Gernert, is listed in the annual tax assessment records of Bradford County from 1812 through 1818. Family tradition states that John Peter Gernert went west in 1818, looking for a better place for his family to reside, and never returned to Bradford County. It is assumed he died during his westward expedition.

John Peter and Anna BUDD Gernert had at least nine children born between 1784 and 1810. The childrenís names are: Polly (Mary), Kate, William Allen, Andrew B., Sally (Sarah) Jane, Barbara, Amanda, Casper G., and Solomon Clay.

All of the Gernert children except the two oldest, Polly and Kate, stayed at Columbia Township and raised their families in that area. Anna BUDD Gernert remained at Columbia Township after her husbandís disappearance and died there in 1853. Anna is buried in Fries Cemetery; her gravestone is inscribed ďAnny, wife of Peter Gernert died December 27, 1853 age 84 years."

I am very interested in discovering more information about my Gernert and Budd/Bott ancestors; especially, information about their lives at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania or in Germany.
