Thank You Glen for this great info, my apologies for being so long in coming back to reply.
I am so very confused about this Samuel Moody and Elizabeth Gerrish of Newbury / Buxton that I could scream!
My info on them has come from Herbert A. Moody's book on the various Moody families of New England.
The book is a great resource and has many true lineages in it but also is plaqued with many Errors!
I believe this Samuel and Elizabeth to be one of his many Errors.
I can find Nothing to state or prove that Samuel Moody of Newbury, husband of Elizabeth Gerrish ever had anything to do with Buxton (Narragansett Township No. 1) as Herb Moody states in his book.
He says that a Proprietor (but doesn't say of Where), was John Moody of Newbury, born 1740 son of Samuel, the Buxton proprietor in 1743.Narragansett Proprietors list Deacon Samuel Moody and a Samuel Moody, Jr. from Newbury.
Well, Samuel Moody, Jr. from Newbury is Not the one that married Elizabeth Gerrish. The Deacon Samuel Moody that he refers to, I Think is the Dea. Samuel Moody who was married to Judith Hale and they were of Newbury. This Deacon Samuel Moody had a son named Samuel Moody, Jr. who according to Land Records, he deeded some land to his son Samuel in 1764, but I don't have notes on Where that land was located.
But I can find nothing to state that a Sgt. Samuel Moody was ever in Buxton, York Co., ME and married to Elizabeth Gerrish and that they ever took up residence there.
Herb Moody's book goes on to say that the earlier mentioned John Moody b. 1740, was among petitioners for land belonging to Brig. General Waldo and the Passamaquoddy River and St. Croix. The land was granted to David MARCH of Haverhill, MA in 1762.Herb assumes that this David March was probably the DAvid March, Jr. born c1730 son of DAvid March, Sr. who married Mary MOODY who was a sister of Capt. Cutting Moody who was one of the proprietors of Buxton.
Herb goes on to say that John Moody b.1740 was a son of Samuel Moody and Elizabeth Gerrish and he died in 1846.However, this Has to be a Typo.Samuel Moody died in 1746, and I doubt that John lived to be 106 years old either.
Joshua Coffin's History of Newbury mentions Sgt. John Moody in 1759 as a son of Elizabeth Gerrish Moody.
A few pgs. over in Herb's book he states that "Sgt." Samuel Moody (Joshua > Caleb > William 1) b. 1710 Newbury was an older brother to Enoch Moody and that he was on the Muster Roll of Brunswick, ME, but was first recorded in Falmouth, ME as being on a committee from Windham, ME in 1743. His brother Benjamin was 43 years old when he married in Newbury. All of Benjamin's 6 children were born in Newburyport, MA.
But in this section there is no mention of Sgt. Samuel Moody being the one that married Elizabeth Gerrish.
The only evidence I have of the link to brothers Enoch and Benjamin are from old York Co., ME Court records.Elizabeth had administrations that money be given to her husband's brothers Enoch and Benjamin. Why I don't know, but it might have been for the care of her youngest son William.IF my theory is correct in that Elizabeth was pregnant at the time of her husband's death in 1746 and she had a child born in 1745, 46 or 47 depending on the month Samuel died in 1746, then these two brothers may have taken in her youngest sons to help raise where she all by herself could not.Elizabeth Gerrish Moody did re-marry in Newbury to a Nathaniel KNAPP 8 years after Samuel Moody died.So she was single again for quite a while.
The really mixed up part of this is that Herb Moody's book on page 11 states that Sgt. John Moody5 . 1740 in Newbury son of Samuel, gives a lineage line of Samuel 4,3,2 > Wm. 1 Moody! If this is true, then the Sgt. Samuel and This Samuel are NOT related at all, BUT the Enoch Moody and Benjamin Moody that Elizabeth Gerrish left money to, ARE brothers of the Sgt. Samuel Moody whose lineage line is Samuel > Joshua > Caleb > Wm. 1 Moody.
So you can see why I am so confused by all of this.
It just seems to never end.One more bit of info lead to More confusion and more unanswered questions.
So at this point I don't know who is wrong....Joshua Coffin in his acct. of John Moody of Newbury being the son of Elizabeth Gerrish Moody mentioned earlier or Herb Moody's book who gives the lineage line of this John Moody as Samuel 4, 3, 2, > Wm. 1 Moody, or the Record books of the York Co. Courts who give that Elizabeth Gerrish Moody left money to her husband Samuel's brother's Enoch and Benjamin which indicate Sgt. Samuel Moody b.1710 whose lineage line was Samuel > Joshua > Caleb > Wm. 1 Moody.
????
I'm at a loss here.If you have the lineage line of your John Moody of Lebanon, Maine perhaps it will help sort this out. I am so confused right now, but was he the son of Elizabeth Gerrish?
Hope I haven't completely overwhelmed you with all of this info, but as you can see, I am lost here.
Thanks again for your great info that you provided.
Hopefully one day I or several of us working on this line will be able to sort it all out.
