Illinois connections?

Because of the residence in Illinois and similarity of names, such as John, Mary, Mathias, & Nicholas, I think these may have a connection in western Germany.

FamilySearch database of the 1880 Census:

Fulton, Whiteside, IL: GERTON, Nicholus, 37, pipe maker, & wf. Eva, 36; they & parents all b. Trier.

Fulton: GERTON, Henry, 35, pipe maker, wf. Katie, 27; they & parents all b. Germany; ch. b. IL: Catherine, 7; Mary, 5; John, 3; & Avy, 10 mos.

Also Fulton: GERTON, Mathias, 27, Prussia; wf. Mary, 21, IA; dau. Regan, 3, IL; bro. John, 18, Prussia; sis. Lucy, 13, IL; father Mathias, 72; he & parents b. Prussia; all three males were pipe makers. [Mathias, b. ca. 1808, must have brought sons Nich., b. ca. 1843; Henry, b. ca. 1845; Mathias, b. ca. 1853; & John, b. ca. 1862. Either his wife came with the elder Mathias, or he remarried because Lucy was b. IL.]

Chicago, Cook, IL: GERTEN, Nicol, 50, brick mason, & wf. Mary, 50, they & parents all b. Treves {Trier}. Ch. b. IL: John, 14; Nicolaus, 12; Peter, 9; & Mary, 6 [Res. IL from 1866].

Cottonwood, Adams, NE: GERTEN, John, 44, & wf. Barbara, 35; they & their parents all b. Prussia. Ch. b. IL: Mary, 11; John, 10; Nicholas, 8; Barbara, 6; & Catherine, 4. Children b. NE: Peter, 2, & Annie, 4 mos. [IL, 1869 - 1876]

Turkey Ck., Mitchell, KS: GIRTEN, John, 32, Rheine; wf. Elisabeth, 25, Prussia; son John, b. IL; dau. Lucy, 1, b. KS. [IL, ca. 1877]

In Ward 3, St. Paul, was Mathias, 52 in 1880. There were also several born in Germany in New York: Christian, 54, Brooklyn; Henry, 37 & 35, both Manhattan; & Fredk., 35, Staten Island.

In case it might help make the connection, on this forum researchers have said that there was a Josef, b. 1784, and a Mathias, b. 29 Mar. 1839, in or near Utscheid (ca. 25 miles NW of Trier). There were families in Spangdahelm (which I couldn't find). John Mathias GERTEN & A. Maria [VIAKERT?] had son Mathias, b. 25 Je. 1868, Irsch (ca. 4 mi. SE of Trier); descendants were of Naperville & Chicago, IL.

Has anyone found other locations near Trier? Were the families Catholic? Does anyone have an Apollonia / Appolonia? My husband's (Catholic) ancestors were Apollonia GERTEN & Anton LOUIS / LUYS, of the Schleidweiler/Rodt area (ca. 8 mi. north of Trier), both deceased before daughter Anna's wedding in 1824, Welschbillig.
