I am a descendant of a family that apparently has had a few variants in how the surname is spelled since they've been in the new world since the early to mid-1700's. The surname of my kin since the mid-1800's seem's to have maintained itself as Gsell. I have also seen it spelled Gssell, Gesell, Gessell, and I'm sure there are others. Most appear to have been a part of the Palatine migration in the early 1700's from the Rhine Valley in Germany. My ancestors ended up in Lancaster and Franklin Counties in Pennsylvania among the "Plain People" and were of the Mennonite faith. Anyway, I'm glad to see that some variant of the surname now has it's own Genforum website and hope more of us can help trace the several Gessell surname lines that are out there!
