Hello Rose,
If you are have difficulty finding your ancestors you may want to look at the possiblity of a different surname. French Canadians used dit names to distinguish themselves from other family members. My family's actual surname is Rivard, yet there are about 15 dit names that they used
i.e Augustin dit Giasson Rivard (this is my ggggg-grandfather, his son Augustin (my gggg-grandfather) went by
Augustin dit LaGlanderie Rivard (to differentiate between the two of them) I also found a cousin who's birth record was
Adeline dit Giasson Rivard, but on her marriage record, and her children's birth record she is listed as
Adeline Rivard Giasson. That's why I stated check all possiblities. My line moved down to Upstate New York in 1839, then moved to Vermont, my ggg-grandfather dropped the LaGlanderie, Giasson and Rivard surname, and Americanized it to Rivers, it took 10 years to find his family. Like I said before Chiasson got switched to Giasson, Dufaut used Giasson as a dit name and Rivard used Giasson as a dit name. If I can help you anymore let me know.
