Hi: My name is Lois Gowans Christensen and I found it interesting that we are both related to the same two surnames.
My great grandfather was Hugh Sidley Gowans and he married Betsy Gowans making her Betsy Gowans Gowans. So far we have not been able to find a link between these two Gowans families. But there is a link to the Gibb name.

Betsy Gibb born about 1755, parents were John Gibb and Elspet Petrie. Betsy married James McLeish in 1786.
They had 7 children: Ann, who is my ancestor; Barbara, William, Robert, Joseph, Betty and Janet. Ann married Andrew Gowans and they were the parents of four children:
James came to the U.S. and then settled in Canada; He married Mary Thompson; Mary married George Cook, stayed in Scotland; Barbara married John Simpson, stayed in Scotland
Betsy, mentioned above, married Hugh Sidley Gowans and they along with her parents came to and settled in Utah.
They were from the St. Vigeans area. Possibly we connect someplace back there, but who knows.
