I am also a descendant of John Wells Gidney, through his son, Dr. Charles C. Gidney.I am having a hard time finding more information on this family, but I will share with you what I know.
John W. Gidney was born August 3, 1837 in NC, and died on April 16, 1898.He was married to Mary Evalina McFarland on July 19, 1865. Mary McFarland was born May 13, 1848, Cleveland Co., NC. and died April 1, 1918 in NC.They are both buried at the Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Cleveland Co., NC. I have seen John's name on a census as "Jnott", which is confusing. Also, he had a brother, Jonathan C., whose name is pretty close to his.
John Wells Gidney was the son of Samuel Sands Gidney (sometimes spelled Gedney), b. May 1797 (maybe in Newburgh, Orange Co., NY).Samuel was married to Cynthia Sharpe Wells, b. September 1, 1807 in Cleveland Co., NC. They were married July 24, 1828, Rutherford Co., NC.Samuel died on June 12, 1848, and Cynthia died August 10, 1854.They are both buried at Mt. Harmony Church Cemetery, Cleveland Co., NC. I think Cynthia's parents are Robert Holloway Wells II and Jemima Price, but I am not sure.
I cannot find any information on Samuel Gidney's family. There are several Gidneys from Newburgh, NY, but I don't know which ones he is related to.
John W.'s son, Charles Gidney, moved to Texas sometime in the late 1800s, and they settled around Williams Co., and later moved north. My part of the family ended up in Hale Co., where Anna Marie Gidney (Charles' daughter)married George E. Wyckoff, Sr., my g-grandfather.I don't know much about the rest of the family at this time.
I hope this helps you out a little bit.
