Hi Thanks for your help!!! Do you have a name of the cemetery where Orr Gilchrist is buried? A picture of his tombstone? This does explain why I didn't find him buried in Iowa.
This is a brief sketch of him. He married Eleanor Nelson 20 Mar 1838 Ashland/Richland Co. Ohio. They moved to Iowa, probably in 1845 as you suggested. I have been unable to find either the Gilchrists and/or the Nelsons on the 1850 census, though the Nelsons moved from Ohio to Iowa in 1846 (I have a family story relating to the Nelson family move. Both the Nelsons and Orr Gilchrist family are found in Washington Twp., Van Buren Co. Iowa on the 1860 census. Eleanor died in 1865 a few days after the birth of her youngest child and is buried in the Birmingham Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Birmingham, Iowa Van Buren Co. After her death he married a 2nd time, to a Sarah Campbell Templeton on 15 Mar 1865 in Van Buren Co. Iowa. On the 1870 and 1880 census, Orr, his younger children from his 1st marriage, and his 2nd family are found in Knoxville Twp., Marion Co. Iowa.
If you wish to know more details, please e-mail me. I would be very interested in getting a picture of his tombstone.
