Hello other Gildeas. I am also first cousin to Tony (1st post) and Tracey (last post). I too was at the reunion in 2000. SInce then I have been back to Ardara 3 more times. The last time this past summer. My parents came out to the U.S. in the 1950. Dad (John Gildea) from Ardara and my mother Teresa McGroarty from Inver. They married and had five children; Gertrude, myself-Patricia, John, Kevin and Brendan. In 2000, they retired and moved back to Ireland. We visit as often as we can. My children (10 & 8) are regulars there and are known now in the town.

I also have heard that the Gaelic word for Gildea means Sons of the Servants of the Lord and was told that we possibly could have come from monks. Who knows? That's what my cousin told me....Surname Craig also of Ardara and an Irish (Gaelic) student at the time.

I too have heard that we are known as "Black Irish" due to Spanish descent. Both parents are very dark....not typical of a lot of Irish.

Love Ardara and our Irish roots.
