Gildea Family Genealogy Forum

Hello,
My ggg-grandfather was Owen Gildea, born about 1800 in Hollymount village, Co Mayo. He was transported (=deported) to Australia, departing Cork on 5 Sept 1823, having received a 7 year sentence for breaking into a house - I guess Australians are the only folk who are REALLY PLEASED to find they have convict ancestors ! His father was Patrick Gildea and his mother was Martha Davey. I've had no luck tracing his line further back than this. Any help would be most appreciated.
FYI: because of the stigma associated with convicts in those days (and maybe illiteracy), he changed the spelling of his name to Kilday, and registered his children's names as Kilday/Killday/Kildry, but by the late 1800's his descendants had settled on Kildey. There are now several hundred Kildey descendants in New South Wales and Queensland.
