I'm afraid my Grandma couldn't tell me much about the Gildersleeves. John & Mary must have died by the time Grandma met Grandad, and so had their daughter, so she only ever met their grandchildren (Grandad's half-siblings.)
All she knows is that Ernest Harry Atkin (b1872) married the daughter of John & Mary Gildersleeve. They had three children before she died:
Lily Atkin, born about 1900. Grandma says she was 'very clean'!
John Atkin (known as Jack). He later moved to Gravesend.
Miriam Mary Atkin, b. Grimsby 1908 (known as Mirie). She was the youngest child of Ernest & ? Gildersleeve.
I guess these children were the reason the Gildersleeves stayed in close touch with the family and were regarded as grandparents to all of Ernest Harry's children.
Ernest married Kate Parkin in 1911 and had 10 more children, including my Grandad: 3 Ernest Harrys (2 died, the 3rd was my Grandad, known as Harry), Kittie, Maisie, Molly, Ruby, Sylvie, Eileen & Herbert.
I hope this small amount of information is of help to you, and I'd like to be kept up to date with anything you find out about this branch of the Gildersleeve family,
Beckie
